What order should I buy deck materials in?
Posts and footings first, then beams, then joists, then decking, then railing. If you build the frame dry before setting footings you can level it exactly — setting posts first and adjusting the frame later is much harder.
How deep should deck footings be?
Below the frost line, which is 30 to 42 inches in most of the northern US and as little as 15 inches in the south. Check your local frost depth — a footing above it will heave.
Does this include permitting and labor?
No. It covers materials only. Permits, engineering for attached decks, and labor typically add another 50 to 100 percent on top.
