Hardwood Flooring Calculator

Hardwood is sold by the box, and the coverage printed on the box is what matters — not the nominal plank width. This calculator gives you boxes to order, board feet for comparison pricing, and the waste factor your layout pattern actually needs.

Questions people ask

How much hardwood flooring do I need for a 12×14 room?

168 square feet. At 20 square feet per box with 10 percent waste for a straight lay, order 10 boxes. Confirm the coverage on the box before ordering — it varies by product.

What is the waste factor for herringbone flooring?

Fifteen to eighteen percent. Herringbone requires every piece to start and end cleanly, so short offcuts are much less useful than in a straight lay.

How many board feet for a floor?

Multiply square feet by thickness times width divided by 12. A ¾ inch by 2¼ inch plank covers about 0.14 board feet per square foot. Board feet are the better comparison when pricing across different widths.

Should I buy extra boards for future repairs?

Yes — hardwood is hard to match later because of color variation and lot differences. Buy one or two extra boxes from the same lot and keep them somewhere dry.
